Sunday Special #11 – Of Korinda and death

Every Sunday I run a Special relating to my writing endeavours and the world of Aeyuu, which is the stage for many stories developed further through the Tales from Aeyuu Patreon. These Blogs are closely tied with my novel-to-be, The Age of Silence, which is basically a story about LoveSacrifice, and Death.

Previous Special Arcs:
0. TAoS Themes (3 journals)
1. The Syrilae (7 journals)

Today, following up on last week's Special The Legacy, we'll delve into the darkest side of the world of Aeyuu, starting at its known foundations.

The Korande line

Whether the Korande family gave their name to Korinda, or took on a resembling name to establish their authority within the country, no one adept of the Necrolore can deny that the Korande family were a major influence in the country's history. Believed to be one of the founding families, most notorious for performing twisted experiments on life itself, the Korandes were revered and feared throughout the knowledgeable circles of Korinda.

Until, one day, the last direct heir up and left his mother as well as, it was rumoured, the Necrolore itself.

Daeron Korande, son to Adrienne Korande, departed Korinda to establish himself in the southern Human lands and cut all contact with his mother - direct and otherwise. Even with powerful Necrolore at her disposal, Adrienne never quite found her son's location. In time Adrienne's rage grew so terrible that, it is rumoured, her heart gave out and she rose back from the grave to pursue her son and destroy him.

The Korande manor has long been looted by the fearless and abandoned back to nature. Some still believe that the Korandes haunt their ancient home. What else can one believe in a land pervaded by the power of death?

Korinda

The country of Korinda was, long ago, the theater of ruthless wars between the elven Elshir to the west, and the Humans living to the the east of what was, in those days, a dark and treacherous swamp. Though immensely powerful magical beings, the Elshir never quite managed to claim the Korindian swamp for themselves. They got bested, for centuries, by a power none of them could wield or understand, upon which Korinda eventually became founded.

After draining the swamplands, some Humans began to colonize these now sturdy and buildable lands. Only those with access to the Necrolore truly settled there, for only they could keep the Elshir at bay - or kill them should they cross the borders. Being dominant creatures, the Elshir did try, again and again, to drive the Humans back and claim their lands... but to no avail. History marks the rise of Korinda as the beginning of the Embers War - a millenia-long war between Elshir and Humans that was characterized by long spans of peace interspersed with brutal, bloody assaults that left none standing in their wake. Yet, the Elshir never quite managed to break through Korinda to invade neighbouring Human lands.

And after every assault, Humans returned to Korinda, rebuilt what had been broken - like moths drawn to a dying flame. History did not record the Humans' suicidal reasons to return to warlands; a true Korindian would say that the smell of death is what attracted their forefathers, for only on dead lands can death itself thrive.

The Necrolore

So is the power over death called - a term first coined amid ancient lines of alchemists who first discovered this unusual type of magic, or so it is believed. History never quite recorded where and when the Necrolore first appeared, but it is fact that the first instances of deathly magic are attributed to the inhabitants of the ancient swamplands drained dry. Korindians themselves are firm believers that the Necrolore was discovered in their midst, and deny its existence with the same breath. Pride and fear often co-exist in their minds for, as powerful as the Necrolore is, it is also believed to be the cause of many a failed crop and twisted tree, and many a stillborn child. Yet, Korinda became eventually well known for its advances in the fields of alchemy and medical science - a strange paradox that has kept Korinda's trading routes open and the country a bustling environment.

With the sciences of death its major trade, Korinda flourished. Centuries and millenia passed, and with them the true secrets of the Necrolore faded from knowledge... but not to all.

And that is all for this founding Special :) next week I'll go into more detail as to what the Necrolore entails. Which is gonna be fun :D

Sunday Special #10 – The Legacy

Every Sunday I run a Special relating to my writing endeavours and the world of Aeyuu, which is the stage for many stories developed further through the Tales from Aeyuu Patreon. These Blogs are closely tied with my novel-to-be, The Age of Silence, which is basically a story about LoveSacrifice, and Death.

This Sunday, after expanding on the lives of the most recent Ansai, I'll be concluding the Syrilae blogs with a cliffhanger Special. :)

Important terms in a nutshell

Syrilae - A race of Elves with tremendous magical powers. It is cultural belief among Syrilae that they cannot exist without an Ansai serving as catalyst for the Aberviohn's power.

Ansai - A term roughly translating as 'leader'. The Ansai is a Syrilae born to a unique legacy within the race, whose very life is tied in with the Aberviohn's lives.
Read more about Ansai Adelouhn and Ansai Sorasiehn - Read more about Ansai Nefahtil and Selessannea

Aberviohn - Glowing crystal blue trees that surround the Syrilae's native Village, located in the Ghostlight forest. They possess a certain sentience and innate power, and are revered as guardians by the Syrilae.

Two years prior to the start of The Age of Silence, Ansai Nefahtil died. The line that was supposed to go extinct as the last, childless Ansai's life evaporated, was instead renewed with the advent of Ansai Aneskia. Sharing no bloodline with the Ansai, Aneskia was perceived as an anomaly, an unnatural presence, and shunned by most of the remaining Villagers.

What the Villagers did not know, was that the Ansai's line had survived.

Selessannea's children

Ansai Nefahtil's daughter, Selessannea, died over five centuries prior, giving birth to her second daughter Cassidy. It is commonly known that Syrilae women cannot safely give birth outside of the Village nor far from the Aberviohn; Selessannea barely survived the birth of her first daughter, Kassandra, and could not withstand the same ordeal four years later.

Through a twist of fate, not their father Daeron but Selessannea's friend Devon took upon himself the burden of caring for Selessannea's children. He loved Cassidy as were she his own; needless to say, his heart broke when, at the tender age of 14, Cassidy committed suicide.

A few years later, Kassandra was found dead, burned alive.

Unable to cope with the tragic loss of Selessannea's remaining child - both of whom he had sworn to her to protect - Devon left town and never looked back. He never got wind of the Vampire attacks perpetrated in town soon after his departure, by a girl who'd looked suspiciously similar to Kassandra.

The taste of power

Kassandra had lost all memory of the past and started living for the simple thrill of the kill. A deep-rooted hatred had remained in her heart, and caused her to lash out at children more than any other types of Humans. Kassandra knew herself powerful, enjoyed manipulating others, dominating them. She spent innumerable years traveling from city to city, going where the kills were easy and men easy to manipulate. During the hidden war that opposed Vampires to Wyr, a race of Human-like shapeshifters descending from wolves and wairs, Kassandra was one of many who drank of their blood and experienced slight mutations - in her case, the ability to stretch her nails to a certain degree, like a wair's claws.

Wherever Kassandra went, power and comfort was all she sought, and all she obtained. In time, she discovered that her power was far from limited to that of the physical. When the whispers came to her mind, she felt as though an old friend was calling her, and she welcomed its presence.

The Necrolore, as it was called in hushed circles, was a form of magic that allowed Humans to manipulate the very lives of people, to kill them without ever touching them. Some, like herself, could force unattached souls to do their bidding, and kill in their stead. This power served her well when she, like many Vampires, got caught up in the civil war that would oppose them to Humans, who had grown fed up with centuries of Vampiric tyranny. She ran and hid, and found in the Elshir man Marius an easy to manipulate fleshen shield who would help her obtain a power greater than anything she had ever thought possible.

And I have to stop it here because otherwise it becomes TMI XD. All will be revealed in time, but I'd like to keep some surprises ;) but she'll certainly be a topic of writing at some point, and like all stories I write, you'll find them at my Patreon ^^

Sunday Special #09 – Ansai Aneskia

Every Sunday I run a Special relating to my writing endeavours and the world of Aeyuu, which is the stage for many stories developed further through the Tales from Aeyuu Patreon. These Blogs are closely tied with my novel-to-be, The Age of Silence, which is basically a story about LoveSacrifice, and Death.

This Sunday, after expanding on the lives of the most recent Ansai, I'll be delving into main protagonist Aneskia's race, the Syrilae, in-depth.

Aberviohn - Glowing crystal blue trees that surround the Syrilae's native Village, located in the Ghostlight forest. They possess a certain sentience and innate power, and are revered as guardians by the Syrilae.

A loving soul

Aneskia was born to her Syrilae mother Niskania and her Elven father Jethrin about a century ago. Jethrin passed away soon after her birth, leaving Niskania to raise her daughter alone. In time, as for all Syrilae, Aneskia's powers began to manifest. These unusual powers allowed her to read others' hearts and experience their emotions as though they were her own.

Early in life, Aneskia was confronted with darkness. The depths of her mother's heart contained sorrow, hatred, sentiments of loss and having been abandoned. Emotions which Aneskia could not quite understand nor cope with; being a kind-hearted child, Aneskia decided to not bother her mother with questions or concern and sought comfort with her mother's best friend, Kristofa, whom she would eventually come to refer to as 'palo' - father.

As she aged, Aneskia's curiousity and desire to help her mother any way she can brought them closer together, though bridging the gap of despair remained an impossible affair. To feel closer to the father she had never known, Aneskia learned with Kristofa of other cultures and languages. One day, she hoped, she would feel capable of helping her mother shed the darkness that had ensnared her heart.

Child of the Aberviohn

At about a century, Aneskia was still a child by Syrilae standards; despite her youth, Aneskia, like other Syrilae, realized one day that the Aberviohn had changed. That there were emotions in the air that did not belong - a sense of heat, of rashness, that influenced the Syrilae themselves and drove anger into their hearts. Violent outbursts became too common an occurrence.

Aneskia learned one day that, as Ansai Nefahtil became weaker, so did the Coming Ansai's power, taken of from the Aberviohn to sustain themselves, spread and grow within the Aberviohn. Power rooted in hatred. Something dark and malicious that, if allowed to spread further, would signify the end of the Syrilae as they had always been: good-hearted, good-natured, and just. Worse than death, the Syrilae would mutate into something too horrible to define.

So Aneskia accepted to defy fate by allying herself with Seliana, a shunned Syrilae woman rumoured to be immortal, with whom Kristofa himself had allied in order to find a solution and avoid for the Coming Ansai to fully become Ansai. With her power rooted in unconditional love, and despite her youth, Aneskia was thought of as the ideal candidate to inherit the Ansai legacy.

The price of change

With the transfer a success and the Coming Ansai's power severed from the Aberviohn's, peace returned to the Syrilae Village - in appearance only. None truly did understand what had happened, or how a common child had suddenly inherited the Ansai's power. Viewed as something now unnatural and disturbing, Aneskia herself was shunned by the majority of her peers. Only a handful of Syrilae remained by her side and took care of her.

Aneskia's heart had broken when she learned her mother had died while the transfer had taken place, and that Kristofa had left without saying goodbye. Only then did she regret her decision, despite the knowledge that there had been no other choice. She had made this decision to save her people, those she cared about... and they had left her side. The only ones left were the Aberviohn, and even their voice sometimes could not reach her.

Herald

Aneskia began to lose time. To lose moments. She would wake up as though from a daydream, feeling impossible eyes staring at her. Another voice had found it way into her heart - a violent, ruthless presence that she came not to fear, as it oft chased those unseen eyes away.

The few years that passed saw Aneskia mature further, her mind adapting to the far greater power at her disposal as Ansai, but her heart remaining torn by fear and self-doubt - and a deeply rooted solitude that, one day, would attract the deadly kind of attention.

* * *

And that is all for Aneskia! There's obviously a lot more to say, but that'll be for the novel ^^ and a short story that is in the works to serve as springboard for said novel. I'm really looking forward to getting it nice and polished to submit it to Kindle *dance* that, we hope, will be a big step towards getting my works better known. Which is the ultimate goal :D (well, known and enjoyed).
